Printing packing slips, pick lists and labels
Where to print each document and label for your Shopify orders with Boxwitness, and on what paper.
Everything the station reads is printed from your Shopify admin or at the station itself: the packing slip that starts an order, the shipping label that closes the box, and labels for items that don't have a barcode. This guide shows where each one is printed, and on what.
What you can print, and where
| What | Where | Paper |
|---|---|---|
| Packing slip, invoice, pick list, returns form | Order page → Print → Boxwitness documents, or several orders from the Orders list | Any printer, Letter or A4 |
| Shipping label | Order page → More actions → Buy shipping label with Boxwitness, or at the station | 4×8 in labels, half sheets or 4×6 in labels |
| Labels for products without a barcode | Boxwitness → Item labels | Letter label sheets or 2.25 × 1.25 in thermal labels |
| Labels for one order's items (personalised or made to order) | Order page → More actions → Print labels with Boxwitness | Letter label sheets or 2.25 × 1.25 in thermal labels |
| Labels for a supplier delivery | At the station, when the package arrives | Letter label sheets or thermal labels |
| Station card (CLOSE / FINISH) | Boxwitness → Instructions, or at the station | Any printer |
Packing slips, pick lists, invoices and returns forms
Boxwitness documents carry the order's QR code on every page. Show it to the station and the order comes up and recording starts; show it with a returned box and the return is received.
One order
- Open the order in your Shopify admin.
- Click Print, then Boxwitness documents.
- Tick what you need: invoice, packing slip, pick list or returns form.
- Print.
Several orders at once
- Go to Orders and select the orders, up to 100 at a time.
- Click Print, then Boxwitness documents.
- Choose the documents. Each order's pages print together, with one combined pick list first if you want it.
Using Shopify's own packing slips? They can carry the order's QR code too. Copy the line from Boxwitness → Instructions into Shopify's packing slip template (Settings → Shipping and delivery → Packing slips → Edit).
No slip at all? Scan or type the order number at the station, or send the order to a station from its page: More actions → Pack or unpack with Boxwitness.
Shipping labels
Boxwitness can buy the label through Shopify Shipping, where it's available: Shopify picks the rate and the postage goes on your Shopify bill. Buy it from the order's page (More actions → Buy shipping label with Boxwitness), or let the station buy it as soon as a box is packed and weighed. That's switched on in Boxwitness → Setup → Settings.
Choose the paper in the same place:
- 4×8 in labels (recommended): the carrier's label with the Boxwitness QR tab below it.
- Half sheets (8.5 × 5.5 in): the label with the QR tab beside it.
- 4×6 in labels: the label only, without the QR tab.
The QR tab is part of the same sticker, and the station's camera reads it more easily than the carrier's barcode. Labels bought in Shopify or anywhere else work too: the station reads the carrier's barcode. To void a label, use the order in Shopify.
Item labels
The station checks each item by its barcode. Most products already have one (UPC or EAN). For those that don't, Item labels in Boxwitness creates a code for each variant and prints QR stickers that carry the SKU. The camera reads them from farther away than a small barcode.
For personalised or made-to-order items, you can give every unit a label for its order (or its customer) instead. Print them from the order's page: More actions → Print labels with Boxwitness. You get the order's code, then one label for each unit. At the station, only that order's labels count for it.
Labels open in a new tab with the print dialog. Print at 100% scale, not “fit to page”, or they won't line up with the sheet.
At the station
- Shipping labels bought at the station open ready to print. Stick the label on and show it to the camera to close the box.
- Supplier deliveries: when a package arrives, the station prints the labels for what's inside: order labels for items going to a customer's order, product labels for stock. Pick Letter sheet or thermal on the station.
- The station card (CLOSE / FINISH): shown to the camera, it closes a box without a shipping label and finishes a return inspection. Keep one at each bench.
Printers and paper
- Documents: any office printer. They print on Letter or A4, depending on your store's country.
- Shipping labels: a 4×8 or 4×6 in thermal label printer, or a regular printer with half-sheet labels.
- Item labels: a small thermal printer with 2.25 × 1.25 in labels, or a regular printer with Letter label sheets (Avery 5160 size, 30 per page).
Print one test sheet first, and keep the printers within reach of the station.
