Setup

A packing station in minutes.

A station is a computer with Chrome and a webcam pointed at your packing desk, or an Android phone with the Boxwitness Station app. No special hardware: open the station, type its code in Boxwitness, and pack.

  1. Open the station in Chrome. It shows a code.
  2. Type the code in Boxwitness. Setup → Stations.
  3. Point the webcam at the desk. Plug in a scale if you have one.
  4. Show a packing slip. The order comes up; recording starts.
  5. Pack, then show the label. The video is saved.

What you need

Probably what's on your desk already.

A computer with Chrome

Any laptop or desktop at the bench. The station runs in the browser, so there's nothing to install on it; Chrome works best. Or use an Android phone instead of the computer and webcam.

Any webcam

A USB webcam on a desk arm or stand, looking down at the box. It reads the codes and films every box.

A USB scale, if you have one

Most USB shipping scales work in Chrome with no drivers: plug it in and click Connect USB scale. Each box is then checked against its expected weight. On a phone, type the weight instead.

A label printer

Shipping labels print on 4×8 thermal labels, with a QR tab the camera reads easily, or on Letter sheets. Packing slips print on any printer.

Android

Or just an Android phone.

Boxwitness Station is the station as an Android app: the phone is the computer and the camera.

  • On a stand or in your hand. Landscape on a stand over the desk, or portrait in your hand; the video stays landscape.
  • The phone's camera reads every code: packing slips, barcodes, Boxwitness item labels and shipping labels.
  • Every box filmed with the order, the items and the time on screen, uploaded to the order in Boxwitness.
  • Sounds and vibration for each item, a finished box and a mistake. Torch and tap-to-focus.
  • Same short code. Open the app, then type its code in Boxwitness → Setup → Stations.

For Android phones. Needs a Boxwitness store: install Boxwitness from the Shopify App Store first. No USB scale on the phone; type the box weight instead.

Step by step

From install to the first box.

  1. Install Boxwitness

    From the Shopify App Store, with a 7-day free trial. It opens in your Shopify admin.

  2. Open the station

    On the bench computer, open app.boxwitness.com/station in Chrome. Or open the Boxwitness Station app on an Android phone. It shows a code.

  3. Type the code in Boxwitness

    In Shopify, open Boxwitness → Setup → Stations and enter it. The station is now linked to your store.

  4. Point the camera at the desk

    Looking down, with the whole box in view: the webcam, or the phone on a stand. On a computer, plug in the scale and click Connect USB scale on the station.

  5. Print packing slips

    On an order's page, Print → Boxwitness documents. Select several orders to print them together; every page carries the order's QR code.

  6. Pack

    Show the packing slip, then each item, then the shipping label. The video and the record are kept with the order.

The camera

Where to put the camera.

The station reads codes and films the box with the same camera, so it needs a clear view of the desk.

  • From above. The camera looks down into the box, so every item is seen going in.
  • The whole box in frame, with a little room around it where items and labels are shown.
  • Even light. A desk lamp helps; avoid a bright window behind the box.
  • Hold codes still for a moment: packing slips, barcodes and shipping labels.

Items without a barcode

Item labels creates codes and prints stickers. Or tick items with a button, or just record the box.

The station card

Shown to the camera, the CLOSE / FINISH card closes a box without a shipping label and finishes a return inspection. Keep one at each bench.

No packing slip?

Scan or type the order number at the station, or send the order to a station from its page in Shopify.

More than one bench

Each bench is its own station, connected the same way. Plans include 1, 2, 5 or unlimited stations.
