What merchants ask before they set up a station. Can't find yours? Write to info@boxwitness.com.

Getting started

What do I need to start?

A computer with Chrome and a webcam (any webcam works), or an Android phone with the Boxwitness Station app. Install Boxwitness from the Shopify App Store, open the station and connect it to your store with the short code it shows. A USB scale is optional.

Which camera and browser work?

On a computer, Chrome works best and any webcam will do: the station reads the packing slip's QR code, item barcodes and shipping labels with it, and films the box. Nothing to install on the computer. On a phone, use the Android app below.

Can I use a phone as the station?

Yes, an Android phone with Boxwitness Station from Google Play. Put it on a stand over the desk or hold it in your hand. It reads the codes with the phone's camera, films every box with the order on screen, and connects with the same short code (Boxwitness → Setup → Stations). A USB scale works only with the computer station; on the phone you type the box weight. More about the Android app.

Do I have to switch between packing and returns?

No. There are no modes to pick. The station tells boxes apart by what it's shown: a packing slip starts packing, and the shipping label of a box that arrived starts a return or a supplier delivery.

Is there a free trial?

Yes, every plan starts with a 7-day free trial. Plans are billed through Shopify; paying yearly gives you 2 months free.

Packing and labels

Do I need a scale?

No, but it helps. With a USB scale, each box is weighed and checked against its expected weight, and the weight goes into the video and the Proof PDF.

Which label printers can I use?

Shipping labels print on 4×8 thermal labels (a 4×6 label with Boxwitness's QR tab, which the camera reads easily) or on Letter sheets. Item labels print on Letter sheets or small thermal labels. Shopify Shipping labels can be bought from Boxwitness, and labels bought anywhere else work too.

What if my products don't have barcodes?

Print item labels from Boxwitness, per product, per order or per customer. You can also tick items off by hand, or set the store to “record only” if you just want the video.

Can I pack several orders in one box?

Yes. When the same customer has several orders waiting for the same full shipping address, Boxwitness offers to pack them in one box with one label, and warns you if they ship at different speeds.

Returns and supplier orders

What if a returned box has no label?

Choose “Return without a label” at the station, open the box on camera and scan the packing slip or returns form inside.

How do supplier emails get to Boxwitness?

Each store gets its own Boxwitness email address, with a name you choose. There are two ways to use it:

  • Order with it. Give it to your suppliers as your email. Turn on a copy to your own inbox and you still see every email; replies go to the supplier.
  • Forward to it. Keep ordering with your usual email and forward your suppliers' emails automatically, with a Gmail filter or an Outlook rule, or one by one.

AI reads each email for the items, the supplier's order number and the tracking numbers. You can also paste an email into the app or upload it. More about supplier emails

What if only part of a supplier order arrives?

The station counts what's really in the box and prints labels only for that. The rest stays “still to come” and can arrive in its own box, announced or not. If it never comes, close the order and what never arrived is noted.

Proof and plans

How do I use the Proof PDF in a Shopify chargeback?
  1. Open the order's record in Boxwitness and download its Proof PDF (one click).
  2. In your Shopify admin, open the chargeback on that order and choose to submit a response.
  3. Add the Proof PDF as evidence, alongside the tracking details.

The PDF is an archival format and stays under Shopify's size limit for dispute evidence, so it can go in as it is.

What counts as a box?

Every box packed and every return inspected at a station, each calendar month. Supplier deliveries don't count. If you go over your plan, your stations keep recording and Boxwitness asks you to move up a plan.

How long are videos kept?

Up to 90 days on Lite and Starter, 180 days on Growth and 365 days on Pro; you can choose a shorter time. After that, records and videos are deleted automatically.

What does Boxwitness do with my customers' details?

Boxwitness is approved by Shopify for protected customer data. It reads customer details from Shopify only when a page needs them, and doesn't keep its own copy of names, email addresses, phone numbers or addresses. Videos, which can show a shipping label, are kept for your plan's retention period and then deleted.
